Message – From Books and Dreams (1973)

“Dreams And Nightmares” has always been one of my favorite krautrock songs… “Message were a progressive rock band based in Germany formed by British guitarist Allan Murdoch and vocalist/woodwinds player Tommy McGuigan. Between 1972 and 1980 they recorded seven albums. McGuigan left after the fourth, Synapse. Murdoch continued to lead the band through several lineup changes and a succession of three different lead singers: David Hanselmann (on Using The Head, later with Triumvirat), Anna Haigis (on their track from the Brain Festival live album) and Sammy Kunig (on their last two albums: Astral Journeys and Miles of Smiles). Less Members: Allan Murdoch, Anne Haigis, David Hanselmann, Emil Wirth, Helmut Fichtner, Horst Stachelhaus, Manfred von Bohr, Peter Schmidt, Tommy McGuigan, Tommy Wahl” (Discogs) To learn more: https://www.discogs.com/artist/463552-Message-3

Karthago – Karthago (1971)

They have a similar sound to Rare Earth, they also have a Jazz, funk rock sound… “Karthago were founded in Berlin by Joey Albrecht (guitar, vocals) and Gerald Luciano Hartwig (bass). In 1970, they engaged the Bolivian percussionist Thomas Goldschmitt (mainly hand percussion) and got a recording contract with BASF. Two additional members were added to their line-up: Ingo Bischof (keyboards) and Wolfgang Brock (drums). “Karthago” was recorded in October 1971 graced with excellent heavy guitar work and the funky, gutsy vocals of J. Albrecht, recalling the Jimi Hendrix Experience and the heavy progressive funk band Funkadelic.” (Discogs) To learn more: https://www.discogs.com/artist/580676-Karthago

Axis – Axis (1973)

This is mostly a progressive rock album, the first track “Waiting A Long Time” has a more of rock sound… “Axis was formed in 1970 by Dimitris KATAKOUZINOS and Demis VISVIKIS, after they had hooked up as members of the backing band for Demis ROUSSOS (APHRODITE’S CHILD). They released three albums between 1971 and 1973. Their third album (their second self-titled album) brings the most interest to this site, as it is a mixture of heavy prog, canturbury jazz-rock, and pure fusion.” (Prog Archives) “The second album by this Greek band who lived in France. It’s incredible diverse and features almost everything: heavy progressive, trad/free-form jazz, Crimson-like passages, experimental and atmospheric Tangerine Dream-like Mellotron-parts, Canterbury-like jazzy progressive and grandiose, symphonic parts with church-organ and choir.” (Rockasteria) To learn more: http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=8374 http://rockasteria.blogspot.com/2011/03/axis-axis-1973-greece-progressive.html

Missing Link – Nevergreen (1972)

Missing Link is a German krautrock, jazz rock/fusion group from Munich, Germany… Discogs calls them an “unusual” band and compares their blending of rock and jazz to Pell Mell’s blending of rock and classical. “Kids Hunting” is my favorite song on this album because I like the way it starts out with guitar, then gets more jazz rock sounding a minute in, and the keyboard riffs throughout the song. It’s a very dynamic song in the way it’s structured… “Spoiled Love” has heavy chords at the beginning that catch your attention… http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=1894 https://www.discogs.com/artist/1058449-Missing-Link-5

Lighthouse – One Fine Morning (1971)

This band sounds a lot like Chicago. “Lighthouse is a Canadian rock band formed in 1968 in Toronto, Ontario. Their sound included horns, string instruments, and vibraphone; their music reflected elements of rock music, jazz, classical music, and swing. They won Juno Awards for Best Canadian Group of the Year in 1972, 1973, and 1974.”

Creative Rock – Gorilla (1972)

This is a Jazz Rock, Krautrock album…. “German band formed in late-1969 as The Bourbon Street Paraders. They changed name to Creative Rock when they gained a contract with Metronome Records.” (Discogs) “With a good deal more invention and a powerful lead singer, their debut Gorilla was barely recognisable as German rock, yet despite this it was still rather good, full of complex brass arrangements and a most energetic rhythm section. LADY PIG followed in a similar, but heavier vein, with a bit more experimentation.” (Rocksteria) To learn more: https://www.discogs.com/artist/350345-Creative-Rock http://rockasteria.blogspot.com/2013/06/creative-rock-gorilla-1972-germany.html
